The Power of Joy: Why It Matters and How to Create It in Your Life
Joy. It’s a word we hear so often, yet it can feel elusive when life gets tough. What if I told you that joy is not something to chase but something that already exists inside of you, waiting to be tapped into? In this post, we’ll dive deep into why joy matters, how you can create it, and most importantly, how it can transform your life.
Joy is Always Within Us
We often think joy is something that comes from external sources: the promotion we’re waiting for, the vacation we’ve been dreaming of, or the perfect relationship. But here’s the truth: joy isn’t something that happens to you. It’s something that comes from within you.
Personally, when I’m having a bad day, I access my internal joy. It’s like a core flame in my belly, a flame that refuses to go out no matter the storm. Sometimes, joy is all I have to hold on to, and that’s okay. Even on days filled with grief or frustration, I turn inward, reconnect with that spark, and allow it to guide me back to myself.
You see, joy is a wellspring that never runs dry. It doesn’t disappear, we just forget how to access it. When you can tap into that internal joy, you start to notice that it multiplies—it attracts more joy into your life, and radiates to others around you.
Joy and Manifestation: The Dynamic Duo
Why focus on joy? Because joy is the foundation of manifestation. Manifestation is all about aligning your thoughts, feelings, and actions with the things you want to bring into your life. But here’s the key: joy is the fuel. It raises your vibration, allowing you to become a magnet for more of the things that bring you happiness.
Neville Goddard said, “Assume the feeling of the wish fulfilled.” When you start to feel the joy of having what you desire—before it physically appears—you’re already manifesting it. It’s not just about visualizing your goals; it’s about feeling as though they’re already here.
When you access joy, you’re tapping into the energy of your desires already being fulfilled. This shifts your vibration and sends out a ripple effect that draws what you want right back to you. Your joy becomes a beacon, signaling to the universe that you’re ready for more.
The Joy Flame: My Personal Story
There have been many times in my life when I felt utterly overwhelmed. Life had thrown one too many curveballs, and I felt like I couldn’t catch a break. But I remembered something I often tell others: joy is always there. So, I closed my eyes, placed my hand over my belly, and visualized that small flame of joy burning inside of me. I focused on it, breathing deeply, and before I knew it, I felt a shift. That flame grew, lighting up not just my body but my entire energy field. This is something I access on days things feel too much. Even when you are experiencing the biggest losses, the deepest griefs, joy is there to access and keep you going.
I didn’t solve all my problems in those moments, but I shifted my energy. I went from feeling like a victim of my circumstances to feeling empowered. That is the power of joy. It brings you back to yourself, to your center, and from that place, you can handle anything.
Joy as a Lifelong Companion
Joy requires you to access it like a practice, . You have to nurture it, tend to it like a garden. But when you do, joy becomes your constant companion. It’s not so much an effort as it is a decision to utilize the nutrients that the garden offers.
Think of joy like a muscle—the more you flex it, the stronger it becomes. Over time, you’ll find that joy isn’t something that happens to you occasionally; it becomes a steady undercurrent in your life. Even during challenging times, that core of joy remains, grounding you and giving you the strength to persevere.
Finding Joy in the Small Things: Glimmer Moments
Joy doesn’t always have to be grand. Often, it’s the small things that carry the most power. I like to call them “Glimmer Moments.” These are the seemingly insignificant moments that can bring you joy when you choose to focus on them. It could be the warmth of the sun on your face, the first sip of your favorite coffee, or the laughter of a friend.
When you start noticing these Glimmer Moments, something shifts. You begin to see that joy is all around you, waiting to be acknowledged. These moments are like little sparks that can ignite a larger flame of joy within you.
Start a Glimmer Journal
If you’re someone who loves journaling, consider starting a Glimmer Journal. Each day, jot down the little moments that brought you joy. Over time, you’ll find that your awareness of these moments grows, and your life will feel more and more infused with joy. You’ll start to look for them, and trust me, they’re everywhere.
Once you begin this practice, you’ll notice a shift in your perception. Those Glimmer Moments will become easier to spot, and they’ll start to multiply. And here’s the beautiful part: when you focus on joy, you attract more joy into your life.
From Affirmations to Appreciation
I know affirmations can feel like a chore to some, but I prefer to focus on appreciation. When you appreciate what’s around you, even the smallest things, you’re automatically raising your vibration. Start your day by appreciating the things in your life, like the comfort of your bed, the taste of your morning tea, or the sound of birds outside your window. This opens you up to receiving more.
Appreciation, much like joy, shifts your energy. It reminds you that you already have so much to be grateful for, and that abundance is always within reach. The more you appreciate, the more you open yourself up to receive.
Imagination: Your Secret Weapon
Your imagination is your most powerful tool. Neville Goddard emphasized the importance of imagination as the true creator. Before bed each night, spend time imagining the life you desire. Feel the joy of already living it. As you do this, you’ll notice how much lighter and more joyful you feel the next day.
Imagination isn’t just for daydreaming. It’s for creating. When you can see and feel your dreams as if they’ve already come true, you’re drawing them closer to you. And guess what? You’re doing it with joy.
Psychological Insights on Joy
The Science of Joy
Psychologists have long studied the concept of joy and its impact on our well-being. Joy is more than just a fleeting emotion; it’s a profound state of being that can influence our mental and physical health. According to research, joy can boost our immune system, reduce stress, and improve our overall quality of life. In fact it’s what we access when we are communing in nature, talking to the trees. As Albert Einstein said, “Joy in looking and comprehending is nature’s most beautiful gift”1.
Emotional Joy
Emotional joy is the feeling of pleasure and happiness that comes from within. It’s often triggered by positive experiences, but it can also be cultivated through practices like mindfulness and gratitude. Emotional joy allows us to connect deeply with ourselves and others, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose.
Joy and the Brain
Neuroscience shows that joy activates the brain’s reward system, releasing feel-good chemicals like dopamine and serotonin. These chemicals not only make us feel happy but also enhance our cognitive functions, improve our memory, and increase our resilience to stress. “The world around us is nothing more and nothing less than a mirror of what we have become from within.” ~ Gregg Braden - So if we really take a look it becomes the chicken and egg argument but ultimately it doesn’t matter. Joy is realized and the world you create from that is the reflection of how much you choose to access that joy.
Joyful Activities for the Week
The Joy Journal Challenge
Every day for the next week, write down five things that bring you joy. They don’t have to be big—remember those Glimmer Moments! At the end of the week, read through your list and reflect on how these moments have lifted your spirits.
Visualization Before Bed
Spend 5-10 minutes each night imagining your ideal life. Feel the joy of living it now. Notice how this practice shifts your mood in the morning.
The Play Day
Dedicate one day this week to pure play. Do something spontaneous and fun—whether it’s going to a park, baking your favorite dessert, or trying out a new hobby. Pay attention to how play reignites your joy.
Appreciation Walk
Go for a walk and make it a point to appreciate everything around you—the colors of the trees, the architecture of buildings, or even the laughter of children. Use this walk to connect with the present moment and the joy it holds.
Glimmer Journal
Keep a journal where you write down small moments of joy, and review it regularly to see how many glimmers you can collect each day.
