"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer." — Albert Camus
The Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year, is a powerful moment that invites us to pause, reflect, and honor the cyclical nature of life. While the world around us may feel quieter, colder, and darker, it is during this time that we are reminded of the profound power of stillness. The solstice is a symbolic turning point—a moment when darkness reaches its peak before the light begins to return.
In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it can be all too easy to overlook the importance of this sacred time. But the Winter Solstice is much more than a celestial event; it is an invitation to slow down, to turn inward, and to celebrate the light we carry within us. As we reflect on this past year, we also make space to release what no longer serves us, allowing us to move into the new year with clarity and purpose.
This blog is an invitation to honor the Winter Solstice as a time for soulful reflection, to acknowledge the growth and transformation you’ve experienced, and to prepare yourself for the rebirth of light in the coming days. It’s a time to tap into your inner peace, deepen your connection with yourself, and reflect on the joy that is within you, even in the quietest of moments.
How the Solstice Connects Us to the Energy of the Earth
The Winter Solstice is not only a time of darkness, but also a time to tap into the deep energy of the Earth. The solstice marks a shift, both physically and energetically. During this time, the Earth’s axis tilts in such a way that the Northern Hemisphere experiences its longest night and shortest day. This moment of stillness offers a unique opportunity to align ourselves with the natural rhythms of the planet.
There’s a wisdom in nature’s cycles that we can draw upon to find our own balance and harmony. If we allow ourselves to tune into the Earth’s energy during this time, we may find ourselves more connected to our inner selves and to the world around us. The solstice is a reminder that the cycles of nature are also the cycles within us.
When we follow the natural rhythms, we create a more balanced, centered life. The Winter Solstice invites us to turn inward, to reflect, and to rest—just as the Earth is in its most restful period. It’s a time to pause and listen to the quiet rhythms within us. This is a perfect opportunity to reconnect with our intuition, our creativity, and our sense of purpose. By reflecting on the past year, we honor what has come before us and create space for new growth in the year to come.
At the solstice, the Earth’s energy encourages us to slow down, embrace stillness, and rest. This moment of darkness doesn’t last forever, and just as the days will gradually grow longer, we too can prepare for a new season of growth and transformation. By acknowledging the natural cycles of the Earth, we are reminded of our own cyclical nature—our need for rest, renewal, and rebirth.
A Time for Reflection: Embracing the Dark to Welcome the Light
As the longest night of the year unfolds, we are reminded of the necessity of darkness. In our world, there is often an overemphasis on light and positivity, but true growth happens when we allow ourselves to sit in the stillness and reflect. Just as the earth rests during the winter, so too do we need moments of quiet contemplation and inner reflection.
Why Reflection Matters:
Reflection is the process of pausing to examine our inner landscape, asking ourselves deep questions about where we’ve been and where we want to go. The Winter Solstice is a perfect time for this type of soulful pause. Here are some things to reflect on as you honor this powerful season:
- What have I learned this year? Take time to reflect on the lessons you've gained from both your successes and challenges. What experiences shaped you? What strengths did you discover within yourself?
- What no longer serves me? Winter invites us to let go of what is no longer needed. This could be old beliefs, habits, or relationships that have kept us in a holding pattern. Let the solstice be a time to release what no longer serves your highest good.
- What do I wish to call into my life? Set your intentions for the year ahead. What do you wish to manifest? What goals and dreams are ready to emerge as the days grow longer? Really take time with this. Dream big. Make lists and reflect if they are what you actually want or what you think you’re supposed to want. There is a difference.
The Power of Rituals During the Solstice
Rituals are a powerful way to mark time, set intentions, and honor significant moments in our lives. They have been practiced for thousands of years across different cultures and belief systems, and there’s a reason why they resonate so deeply with the human spirit. Rituals are a way of slowing down and making a conscious effort to connect with the moment. They help us take a break from the fast-paced world and create a sacred space for reflection and gratitude.
During the Winter Solstice, rituals take on an even deeper significance. This is a time when we celebrate the return of the light after the longest night of the year. For many, it’s a moment to pause and reflect on the year that has passed and set intentions for the year ahead. You don’t have to be religious or follow any particular tradition to enjoy the benefits of a ritual. Rituals are a way of connecting with the essence of the season, regardless of your spiritual beliefs.
A solstice ritual could be as simple as lighting candles and taking a few moments of silence to honor the change of season. This symbolic act of lighting the darkness represents hope, renewal, and the promise of new beginnings. Or you could create a little ceremony for yourself, such as writing down what you’ve learned from the past year and what you hope to bring into your life in the year to come. The act of writing things down makes them feel more tangible and real, and the solstice energy helps infuse those intentions with extra power.
You could also take time to reflect on the natural world around you. As you sit quietly in your space, think about the changing seasons and how they mirror your own inner cycles. A ritual can be as simple as pausing to breathe, connecting with nature, or finding a moment of silence. The key is to be intentional and to give yourself the time to slow down and reflect.
Here is a list of some soulful rituals to honor the solstice and the turning of the wheel:
- Light a Candle for New Beginnings: Light a candle to symbolize the return of the light. This simple act is powerful—a reminder that after every darkness, there is a new beginning. As you light the candle, reflect on the new opportunities that await you in the coming year.
- Create a Vision for the New Year: Take time to create a vision board or write down your intentions for the year ahead. Use this time to really dream big and visualize the life you want to create. The solstice marks the rebirth of the sun, and you are invited to rebirth your dreams along with it. I would challenge you to put things on your board this year that are not only dreams but things you know you are capable of but have never tried. Really take time this year to put yourself first.
- Offer Gratitude and Release: As part of your solstice ritual, write down things you are grateful for from the past year. Acknowledge your growth, your journey, and all the blessings you’ve received. Once you’ve done this, write down anything you wish to release—anything that no longer aligns with your true self. Set fire to these lists as a symbolic gesture of letting go. Often I will write something and crumple it up prior to burning putting all my releasing energy into that paper.
- Sit in Silence: Spend some time in silence, allowing the stillness to speak to you. The quiet of the solstice provides the perfect opportunity for deep meditation, prayer, or contemplation. Allow your mind to quiet and your heart to listen. Trust that the answers you need are already within you. Don’t stress yourself over this. You may receive messages, you may just rest and you may even fall asleep. Trust.
The Gift of Stillness: Allowing the Silence to Speak
In today’s world, we are constantly bombarded with noise—both external and internal. The Winter Solstice invites us to step back from this constant rush and embrace stillness. This is a time to be gentle with ourselves, to honor our need for rest, and to appreciate the quiet moments that bring us peace.
Sometimes, the most profound insights come when we allow ourselves to just be. This stillness allows us to hear the quiet whispers of our soul, the gentle nudges that guide us on our path.
Take a moment to breathe deeply and give yourself the gift of peace. Close your eyes, inhale deeply, and exhale all that no longer serves you. Embrace the quiet as a space to connect with your deepest desires and your truest self. In past times I have gone out in the winter snow with my journal and just laid in the peace. Sometimes things come, sometimes it’s just peace. Let spirit guide you. There is no wrong answer and the practice is healing.
Solstice as a Metaphor for Personal Growth
Just as the Winter Solstice marks the return of the sun, it symbolizes our own potential for personal growth and transformation. During the darkest days of the year, it might seem like our dreams and desires are far off. But in truth, the potential for new beginnings is already within us.
Now is the time to trust in the process, to acknowledge that growth often happens quietly and beneath the surface. Just as the earth is slowly gathering energy for spring, you are gathering the energy needed for your own personal rebirth in the coming year. Trust that your light is already within you and that it will shine brighter as you move forward.
A Poem for Reflection:
As we move into the season of reflection, I’ll leave you with this beautiful poem that I think describes the different essence the solstice can evoke.
Winter Solstice
by Tess Jolly
I will not write about Christmas lights garlanding the tree,
how steadily red blends to sapphire emerald gold,
how strong the little bulbs must be to throw their dancing hearts
upon the café wall, how children try to catch them.
I will not say there is tinsel draped about the branches
like seaweed over pebbles, nor paint the cloths swaddling our skins
apricot, indigo, violet, teal. I will not speak of glazed
pastries on the counter, how they shine so much
they could be varnished, there for the hell-of-it, for the sheer
beauty of their glistening berries. I’ll turn away from buses heaving
down the rush-hour road, ignore how in all this rain
the headlamps could be tumbling garnets, polished amber,
as if a picture-book box of pirate treasure had spilt its pearls
and precious stones across a tarmacked page.
I will not describe how the sun becomes the sea, I will not delight
in words to name its colours – cerise, crimson, indigo,
scarlet, madder, rose. I will not try to find a way
to show your smile across the table, how it slips like warm charcoal
into the fabric of my heart. I will not suggest I light a candle
as the year prepares to wane, that you hold a second wick to mine
then another and another, that together we whisper a prayer
for each growing flame. I will not talk about the light
that is everywhere, how far you have to travel for the sky
to be completely black (and even then there are stars, there is the moon’s
borrowed brightness). I will not question why fire burns more fiercely
before sputtering out, or how – when we know we’re dying –
we can be so fully alive. I will not say these things because this
is a poem about darkness. I am writing about the darkness.
Conclusion: Stepping Into the Light
The Winter Solstice is a reminder that we all have a light within us, even in the darkest times. By reflecting on the past year, embracing the stillness, and setting our intentions for the year ahead, we create the space for growth, joy, and manifestation.
This is a time for self-compassion, a time to honor the journey, and to trust that the light will return, both in nature and in our hearts. Just as the sun rises again, so too will our dreams. Let's honor the darkness, knowing that it is a vital part of the process. Embrace the light within you, and know that you are always on the right path.
The Solstice Invitation
It is time to quiet,
To hear the stillness.
Mother Nature has bestowed us a gift—
A day of less light,
A day to reflect and
Be ever grateful.
We are given the opportunity
To acknowledge the cycles.
We light our candles
And understand.
We understand that this
Too shall pass,
The light will return,
And the busyness with it.
But for tonight, we are
Still—and we remember,
That we are one
With nature.
We are allowed
To listen.
